February Meeting Recap!

Calendar of Events:

Our ABC House quilt drive is in full swing! REMINDER: Diana's mom, Florence, has once again graciously offered to quilt ABC House quilts for us! Diana will be taking quilts to her in March - please have your tops + backs to her by the March 13th Meeting. Quilts will return to us in June and be distributed back to each maker to bind.

This month our member, Nancy, gave an excellent presentation on batting! She gave us a great hand-out along with a baggie of batting samples. Any members that missed the talk and would like a copy of the hand-out, please reach out to Sarah at the next meeting (she has extra copies!). I think we all learned a lot about all the different types and when + when not to use each kind. Thank you Nancy!!

Show + Tell:

Our meeting fell on Valentine's Day so our swap was heart themed mini (10-inch) quilts using either the decorative stitches on our sewing machines, or hand stitching! They were all so great!

January Meeting Recap!

Happy New Year Quilters!

Calendar of Events:
The 2nd annual Willamette Valley Quilt Festival will be held on February 1st & 2nd at the Linn County Fair and Expo Center in Albany, Oregon. The hours are from 10am to 5pm, both days. CMQG will have a table and we're looking for members to sign up to help each day. Please contact Pattie, if you'd like to help out!

We're excited to announce that we'll be hosting a free motion quilt class with Christina Cameli in October - more details (date, cost, location) to come!

The members present at the January meeting also voted YES! to continue with our ABC House quilt drive! This will be our 3rd year donating quilts to ABC House - we'll be collecting them all year to gift to ABC House in December. We love supporting this amazing organization! NOTE: Diana's mom, Florence, has once again graciously offered to quilt ABC House quilts for us! New Years Goals:
Our January meeting usually centers around our individual goals, plans, quilting/sewing skills we'd like to learn and patterns we hope to accomplish in the coming year. As we went around the table, there were a couple of common themes - finishing projects (UFO's!) and learning/further developing our free motion quilting skills. 

Some other goals were: learning how to quilt on a long arm, cleaning + organizing our craft/sewing spaces, learning needle turn applique, piecing triangle quilts and improv quilting.

Next Meeting: February 14th
Our swap for February will be 10" mini quilts featuring decorative stitches - with a heart theme, of course! It's a chance to try out a few of the many decorative stitches that come with our sewing machines (or get creative with hand stitches, if you prefer). This will be a blind swap - so bring your finished mini in a brown paper bag. As always, feel free to add other little goodies to the bag, if you'd like!

2019 Meetings & Sew Days!

The Corvallis Modern Quilt Guild meets monthly on the 2nd Thursday of each month in the Community Room of the First Alternative Co-op South Store (1007 SE 3rd Street). We meet from 7pm to ±8:30pm. 

We also will host four Saturday Sew Days this year (February, April, August & October) from 10am to 5pm. Currently our Sew Day location is to-be-determined. We will announce the location of sew days as soon as it’s been secured.

February 2018 Meeting Recap

Meeting Discussion

This month's meeting was very loosely organized! We had a round (square) table discussion about future meetings this year. Susan passed around a list of ideas for talks/demos/interests, and there were some strong contenders on the list that will show up at future meetings.

To that end, Deanna Carpenter will be demonstrating how to use Bloc Loc rulers and Quilter's Select rulers and accessories at our March meeting on the 8th.

Our QuiltCon donation quilt has made it to Pasadena, and it will be displayed during the convention.

 

Show and Tell Highlights

Tanya showed off her adorable cat quilt:

Sarah brought in her jelly roll race quilt, in her usual, excellent color choices:

Caroline brought in two rugs she made from a jelly roll and a jelly roll plus. These rugs were made using a pattern from RomaQuilts on Etsy:

Lastly, Sheila showed off her finished wonky tree table runner, all ready for the holiday!

January 2018 Meeting Recap

Business Review

Yearly dues are due as soon as possible; pay through PayPal or at the next meeting.

Our sew day format has changed. Sew days will be held during the even months this year, except for December, on the third Saturdays. Check the meetings and sew days page for the actual dates. The location will be changing just about every time, so check your email or Instagram for the location.

The QuiltCon quilt is being quilted by Upstairs Birdie, and will need to arrive in Pasadena by February ninth. We should be able to display our quilt at the Willamette Valley Quilt Festival table and still have time to send it off.

We will have a table for recruitment and informational purposes at the Willamette Valley Quilt Festival on February 2-3 from 10-5. Quilts can be submitted until the 27th for display or to be judged in the show. Check the website for details.

Meeting Discussion

Goals for sewing in the new year were discussed. There was a common refrain of sewing more for ourselves, as well as experimenting with new techniques. Accountability for UFO completion was another topic that interested more than a few people. Stay tuned for more ideas on that!

42 Quilts for ABC House!

After several months of our quilt drive, on December 14th, three board members trekked to Albany with several stacks of quilts!

 

 Our members and the community gave 42 quilts to this wonderful organization! The staff were so grateful, and these gifts will mean a lot to the recipients.

March 2017 Recap

Business Review

This summer is shaping up to be packed with events!

The sew day for June, on the 24th, will be replaced with a meet up with the Eugene Modern Quilt Guild at Sweet Earth Vineyards in Monroe.

We have rented a booth at the Corvallis Farmers' for August 5th.

The Corvallis Modern Quilt Guild is sponsoring a class, quilting curves with Jen Carlton-Bailly.

Our second group project of the year is a Quilt of Valor. The quilt will be comprised of a mix of rail fence blocks and pin wheel blocks, in the classic flag colors, red, white, and blue. Blocks are due May eleventh.

Presentation Review

Jessy Yorgey and Geary Cuniff came to the March meeting to offer their inimitable wisdom regarding color. The first advice offered was not to feel guilty about building a stash. Your stash is personal, handpicked, colors, motifs and oddball prints that you love. Think of it as a collection or a library.

They discussed different ways to quantify fabric, by color first of all, value, which is the amount of light or dark, style, which can refer to the pattern of the fabric, country, contemporary, juvenile, holiday, etc.

They brought in an excellent example of a color wheel that quilters can use to help choose fabrics. This color wheel is also sold at Quiltwork Patches.

This color wheel has lots of information on it. It helps with color mixing, tones vs tints, warm and cool colors.

They presented a lot of information on color theory, including different color schemes, how to organize fabric before making a quilt, and looking at value and intensity. They are always very helpful at Quiltwork Patches, so stop by and say "Hi!"

Show and Tell Highlights

 The QuiltCon Charity Quilt 2017 returned from QuiltCon, so we were once again able to admire it. Such a great job was done by all our members!

                  

Erin brought in some quilts to show off. Both baby quilts are quite lovely.

Diana brought in a baby quilt she plans to donate to Quilts from Caring Hands.
