On a Friday, our Guild got approval for making facial masks from Samaritan Hospital. We have invited members of Marys River Quilt Guild to also take park, and now we ask for your help. Our immediate goal is to get as many masks as possible to Samaritan by Monday, but the effort will continue as now many clinics, care centers, fire departments, etc., are asking for masks made by community members.
Samaritans first choice for fabrics are: sheets, pillowcases, and tight knit cotton t-shirts/fabric as these fabrics do the best job of filtering small particles. Quilting cottons can also be used but you might consider using three layers instead of two show in the tutorials. All masks will be washed by Samaritan as soon as they are received: no need to pre-wash your fabrics.
There are links below to two pattern tutorials: pick which option best suits your skill level. Please: all types of masks are needed!
Samaritan’s first preference is a mask with a rust-proof wire along the top, to form around the bridge of the nose, and a pocket to insert a filter (Samaritan will provide the filter.) Listed below is a link to a blog post with tips for making this type, which includes a link to the YouTube video tutorial. If you want to make one for your personal use, the blog has some tips about what to use.
However, Samaritan will also take the easier-to-make mask shown in the video provided by Boston’s Deaconess Hospital. There is also a link at the bottom to that video. Please, if you don’t feel comfortable with your sewing skills to make the more difficult mask, make as many of these as you can. They will certainly get used by people throughout our community. The need is great.
NOTE: Samaritan would like to have masks with ties, and masks with elastic IF the elastic is latex free. If you’re not sure about your elastic, make ties. Make sure the ties/elastic are sewn tightly into your seams so they don’t pull out with heavy use.
Friends, fire up your sewing machines! If you have any questions, please contact as at corvallismodernquiltguild@gmail.com
