Improv Challenge 2020!

CMQG Improv Challenge 2020
Sponsored by Winter Creek Cloth!

Here are the guidelines... there aren't many. Hey, it's IMPROV!

Quilt top only: no need to quilt and bind, so give yourself the freedom to play and experiment.

Choose your size and shape (but make it at least 24" x 24").

Select a minimum of three from the following improv piecing techniques and incorporate them into a quilt top:

  • wonky stars
  • triangles/flying geese
  • free-form curves
  • inserts
  • rings/roses
  • slabs/floating squares

Other techniques you want to try? GO FOR IT! Just include a minimum of three.

This challenge is voluntary and for personal growth only, to apply what you've learned about improv piecing-- and specifically to get yourself out of your comfort zone! There are NO judges, so relax and enjoy the creative process.

Everyone who finishes a top and submits a photo by November 9th will be entered to win a $50 gift certificate, courtesy of our improv challenge sponsor, Winter Creek Cloth!

CMQG 2020 Color Wheel Challenge

Here are the guidelines:

All fabrics in your quilt must be solid in color, with no design or pattern.

Choose a solid color as your main focal color, then use its complementary and two of its analogous colors, along with a neutral color of your choice (grey, white, cream, tan or black). All fabric must be solids. Use your main focal color at least twice as much as all the others.

Mini quilts must be sewn, quilted, and bound. They should be no smaller than 20"x20" and not larger than 36"x36".

Every guild member who completes a mini quilt, follows these guidelines, and shows the quilt during our August 13th Zoom Meeting will be entered into a drawing for prizes. Grand prize is a stack of 25 Kona Cotton fat quarter solids!!

There are NO judges, so have fun and create your best work! This challenge is voluntary and for personal growth only -- to apply what you've learned and increase your skills. So get creative! Make it modern!

707 Masks!

Phew! We finished another mask collection last night... 330 masks total (including masks that were made and distributed elsewhere.) Friends, that means you made over 700 masks in under seven days! Wow! Never underestimate the power of a compassionate individual with a sewing machine!

This latest collection went mostly to Lumina Hospice, Stoneybrook, and West Hills Memory Care Center

We are now turning coordination and collection over to the FaceBook group the Corvallis Sewing Brigade (https://www.scruffingtons.org/ for those who don’t use FaceBook.)

* * * * *
I'm copying below the summation you can also see on the Brigade's FB page, but I'll reiterate: ALL masks of ALL kinds are needed. Make which ever one you enjoy and of which you can create the most of quickly.

What we are working on // What each kind of mask is for:

Note: All masks are useful - make masks you can enjoy making and can make a lot of!

The pleated pocketed mask (with ties mainly, not elastic) because these are meant to have .3 micron filters in them making them equivalent to an N95 mask. To be used for people who have tested positive.

The pleated mask, no pocket with either elastic or ties. These are for everyone else and are for quick change, quick use, can be washed (not autoclaved). Elastic is great and quick (easy on, easy off - good for many applications) but may be a problem for some people (latex allergies etc) so ties are good too for these, but all masks will be used and people with latex allergies can use the tie masks for sure! These masks go to hospice, the youth shelter, adult health/foster care etc as well as to the hospital to be used by family and non surgical staff. We need TONS of these too.

We are not worrying about wire at this time. Feel free to make wired masks but please don't get bogged down by that - we have asked Samaritan to provide the proper wire or point us to the medical grade they want. It can be added later as needed. Or you can make some with wire for friends as you desire. Just don't let it slow you down.

Thank you everyone - you are amazing!

Drop location: 1333 NW 17th Street - Corvallis (buckets in the driveway)

Benton County EOC is now coordinating donations. This site provides a list of everything needed along with ways to volunteer and to ask for help if you need it.

Mask making info on the page as well.  But the FB page remains the best source for mask making details.

Many thanks for all you're doing!

Masks for Samaritan

On a Friday, our Guild got approval for making facial masks from Samaritan Hospital. We have invited members of Marys River Quilt Guild to also take park, and now we ask for your help. Our immediate goal is to get as many masks as possible to Samaritan by Monday, but the effort will continue as now many clinics, care centers, fire departments, etc., are asking for masks made by community members.

Samaritans first choice for fabrics are: sheets, pillowcases, and tight knit cotton t-shirts/fabric as these fabrics do the best job of filtering small particles. Quilting cottons can also be used but you might consider using three layers instead of two show in the tutorials. All masks will be washed by Samaritan as soon as they are received: no need to pre-wash your fabrics.

There are links below to two pattern tutorials: pick which option best suits your skill level. Please: all types of masks are needed!

Samaritan’s first preference is a mask with a rust-proof wire along the top, to form around the bridge of the nose, and a pocket to insert a filter (Samaritan will provide the filter.) Listed below is a link to a blog post with tips for making this type, which includes a link to the YouTube video tutorial. If you want to make one for your personal use, the blog has some tips about what to use.

However, Samaritan will also take the easier-to-make mask shown in the video provided by Boston’s Deaconess Hospital. There is also a link at the bottom to that video. Please, if you don’t feel comfortable with your sewing skills to make the more difficult mask, make as many of these as you can. They will certainly get used by people throughout our community. The need is great.

NOTE: Samaritan would like to have masks with ties, and masks with elastic IF the elastic is latex free. If you’re not sure about your elastic, make ties. Make sure the ties/elastic are sewn tightly into your seams so they don’t pull out with heavy use.

Friends, fire up your sewing machines! If you have any questions, please contact as at corvallismodernquiltguild@gmail.com

Quiltcon 2020!

Each year, the Modern Quilt Guild hosts QuiltCon, the largest modern quilting show of its kind. An exciting part of QuiltCon is the Charity Quilt Challenge! The Modern Quilt Guild chooses a theme and color palette and then guilds + individual members from around the world work to create quilts that are displayed at the show. The quilts are then sent back to the makers to be gifted to a local charity.
This year the theme was "text" with a color palette of grey scale.

We choose "alis volat propriis"-- the state motto of Oregon meaning "she flies with her own wings". We love working our beautiful state into our quilts when we can!

**Quilting was by Jammie of The Long Arm of the Law.

The quilt will be back for show + tell at the March 12th meeting! We're looking forward to showing this quilt off at various events throughout the year, before we gift it to a local organization.

Nice work CMQG Members!!

February Meeting Recap!

Guest Speaker - Nancy Bryant:

Nancy is a retired Oregon State University professor and founder of the Contemporary Fiber Arts Guild. She gave a fantastic presentation on working with color -- hue, value, intensity. Thank you Nancy, we really loved what you shared!
