Holiday Party and Membership Info

Join us for our annual CMQG Holiday Party this Friday, December 18th, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at Block 15 Restaurant in the Game Room!

This month we're swapping pillow covers. They don't need to be holiday themed but since this is a holiday party, lets wrap them like a real gift instead of the usual brown bag!!

Please also bring a non-perishable food item/canned good for donation to a local food pantry.

And lastly, don't forget it's time to renew your current CMQG membership (or join for the 1st time!). Please see our "buy now" option here on the blog to pay online. If you would prefer not to pay online, you can bring cash or check to the party on Friday. Please be sure to renew by 12/31.

We hope to see you Friday!!

September News

Since we've had issues with some of our members not receiving our emails, I'm posting our last group email here, minus the bit about Pam's class since that info was just posted.

Hi Everyone!  Lots of info in this newsletter, so sit down with your favorite drink and enjoy :)

First, I'd like to thank Caroline for donating her awesome Rebel Quilt to be raffled off as a fundraiser for the guild!  So generous!! The winner, Karen Keller of Covington, Washington, was announced last night on Instagram. A big thanks to Sarah & Courtney for doing such an amazing job of organizing this fundraiser and to everyone who posted on their various social media sites!

Our meeting last week was held outside, just west of the OSU Craft Center.  Unfortunately, not everyone received the email that I sent out regarding our change in location due to the Craft Center being closed. In addition to the email, I also posted it on Facebook and Instagram; however, I neglected to post it on our blog.  I apologize for that, and we are looking into a different email program as there have been way too many instances where members are gettingsome emails but not all emails.  This just isn't acceptable, and we will work through this as quickly as possible.  If you'd like my cell # to reach me regarding our meeting/sew dates or anything else, please send me a separate email, and I'd be happy to give that to you.

Our Farmers Market event was a success!  Thank you to everyone who participated by being at the event and/or donated items. I've requested an earlier date for next year's event to hopefully avoid the bad weather. We had quite a few people who filled out our interest forms, and Courtney has been in contact with all of them.  We even had one of those quilters show up for our meeting!

QuiltCon Charity Quilt -- We have decided on the Magic Triangles block Magic Triangles Tutorial This block takes two 10" squres of white and two 10" squares of a color to make one block.  This is the color palette recommended by The Modern Quilt Guild http://quiltconwest.com/get-involved/member-charity-challenge/  Dana will be cutting 10.5" squares of white and the five colors to be used.  She will bring fabric to the September Sew Day on the 26th as well.  The cost of the fabric will be covered by the guild.  This was okayed by our treasurer who was present at the meeting :) (no names mentioned).  We will use a coordinating print for backing & binding (print to be decided).  Courtney has offered to piece the quilt, Camille's mom has agreed to quilt it, and Linda has offered to bind it. Thank you ladies!  We will need these blocks to be turned inno later than the October meeting. We don't want anyone to be stressing about this quilt over the holidays again.

If you haven't stopped by our Quilt County display, please do! It's at Oregon Coffee & Tea at the corner of 2nd and Madison in Downtown Corvallis.  Thanks to everyone who donated items to display and also those who helped set up the display!  I will get details on when we can take it down.  It's scheduled to be there through the end of September.

Have you thought about being on the CMQG board for 2016?  I know some of you have, and we discussed this at the meeting last week.  If you are interested in running for a board position or would like to nominate someone else, please email the board at corvallismodernquiltguild@gmail.com  We will accept nominations until October 1st. Voting will be onlinethis year, and the deadline to vote will be October 15th.

Our December meeting will be replaced with our holiday party on December 11th.  Do you have any suggestions for places in town that might have a separate room for large groups?  I checked with Block 15 regarding their game room.  They said that their policy is  not to reserve the game room on weekend evenings due to the high volume of customers in the restaurant. But, since I requested it so early and was the first request for a holiday party, they have offered two options - either a lunch reservation on December 11th (most of us work so I don't think that will work) or Saturday December 19th due to the end of the term at OSU.  So....if anyone has any other suggestions or would like to weigh in on either of these options, please reply as soon as possible.

OK, last but not least......the swap for October will be a fall-themed mug rug. If you aren't familiar with what a mug rug is, it's basically a large coaster or a small placemat - just big enough for a cup/glass/bottle of your favorite drink and a small snack.  Just google it or search on Pinterest. So much out there!   The swap for November will be hour baskets (find the tutorial on Craftsy at Hour Basket by Hearts & Bees  (posted by Kelby Sews on Instagram, who is half of Hearts & Bees).  And the swap for the holiday party is a pillow cover, any size from 14" to 20" This does not need to be holiday themed, just something beautiful and fun and modern!

Oh my goodness....I think I'm done now.  I hope I haven't bored you, but it was a very busy meeting with lots of information to share. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Lisa

July meeting - meetup with Eugene MQG

Meet Up Details

Where: Sweet Earth Vineyards, 24843 Kyle Rd. Monroe,

OR

http://www.sweetearthvineyards.com/

When: July 18th, 2015 12—2

What to bring:

 Quilts to show! Sweet Earth has a wonderful area for

hanging quilts and extra clothes line available as well.

 Snacks to share! This will be a very informal potluck.

Any snacky food is encouraged.

 Money for wine! Sweet Earth has tastings available

for $5 (includes 5 tastes) which is waived with a pur-
chase of wine. You can also buy glasses of your favor-
ite.

 Totes to swap! We will be having a swap between the

guilds and the theme is totes! Bring a tote in a brown

paper bag to swap with one of your fellow guild

members.

 Water to drink! This is taking place in July so make

sure to bring a water bottle of some sort. Sweet Earth

does have a small air conditioned tasting room and

the area we will be occupying is shaded.

The winery is pretty easy to find, driving south on 99W go to Monroe, turn right on Alpine Rd (I'm pretty sure I remember a sign saying Sweet Earth, but it's right after Dairy Mart), drive 3 miles or so to Kyle Drive and take a left. The winery is on Kyle Drive about 1.5-2 miles in. You can also get there taking Bellfountain to Alpine as well.

Lots of people have asked about carpooling and I think that is an excellent idea! The winery has a decent amount of parking, but carpooling will be helpful.

Thanks and I look forward to seeing everyone!

We have a New Home!!

The Corvallis Modern Quilt Guild is happy to announce that we have a new home! We have partnered with Oregon State University's Craft Center.  Our meetings and sew days will now take place on the OSU campus in the Craft Center which is in the new Student Experience Center. The Craft Center is a beautiful new space, very well lit and is perfectly set up for a sewing studio! We are so very happy with this new collaboration.  Starting THIS SATURDAY  (May 23rd) we will have our monthly Sew day in the Craft Center. The craft center is located on the bottom (basement) floor of the Student Experience center.  Members please go to the North (back) Entrance (this is the only entrance that is open on Saturdays).

Please view the OSU Parking MAP here - it is updated with the new building location and will show you where you can park

Meetings will remain on the 2nd Friday of the month and will also take place at the craft center however due to OSU's schedule there will be some alterations to the meeting schedule so please check the Google Calender ----> on the right sidebar to be sure.

Won’t you join us!?  We would love to see you.  All members of the Corvallis and surrounding community are welcome to attend. Come see what the Modern Quilt Guild is all about.

Quiltcon - it's just over a month away!  We did manage to finish our charity quilt on time and we couldn't have done it without your help! A huge special thanks goes out to Lisa for quilting it and to Linda for adding a sleeve, label and mailing it to Austin! Without these ladies - this project would not have been done on time.  Thanks girls!

Lisa presented a sampling of nametag ideas - we will be crafting these at our January Sew Day (Jan 24th noon-5 at Crossroads Church 2555 NW Highland Dr.)   She created a Pinterest board you can follow to get some design ideas and inspiration.

Quiltcon 2015 Charity quilt project

Quiltcon is the bi-yearly conference of the Modern Quilt Guild.  This year they had a challenge to make a quilt for charity using the quiltcon color palette and an alternate grid design.

I thought it would be fun if the quiltcon charity quilt we made reflected our home town so I chose the theme of 'confluence' for our quilt which represents the confluence of rivers that meet here in our hometown of Corvallis, the Mary's River and the Willamette River. This gives a little nod to our roots.  Corvallis means "heart of the valley" so we've added a little heart to the quilt.

I thought it would be appropriate to make a somewhat wonky and improvisational quilt block along the lines of the shattered slash and insert block designed by the queen of modern quilting herself, Jacque Gering.  We took elements of her block and made ours even easier by inserting 2 slashes of fabric to represent the two rivers in Corvallis.  Each member chose colors from the quiltcon palette and proceeded to make a block or blocks however they preferred using the slash and insert method.  The quiltcon fabrics were graciously provided by one of our members, Dana McCluer who runs Wintercreek Cloth.

Methods for block construction were posted in a tutorial post you can find here.

After the blocks were returned, I sewed them all together in an offset design with lots of negative space.  The quilt was quilted by Lisa and finally Linda Brown added a sleeve, label and binding.

Unfortunately, we didn't get any good daylight shots due to our very busy (over the Christmas holidays) time schedule.  Lisa and I will try to get a good post of the quilt at Quiltcon.  Here is the finished quilt:

We will be donating this quilt to a local Corvallis Charity.
